Documentation

Introduction

Welcome to V3 of our API! On this page you can read about how to get the most out of it. To get access, you’ll need to register with us – you can do that here. The first three months are on us!

Our API is structured to make our detailed metadata as easy for you to access as possible. Working across a number of topics, you can either search for key terms or specify one of our IDs. To tell us what information you want, include a depth parameter too – all this is outlined in the reference key below. Happy coding!

Upgrading to V3

New Features

Version 3 of the API has loads of new data - there are now four times as many albums avalible, with a greater amount of detail.

Other new features include:

  • Searching for items added to the database since a particular time.
  • Viewing associated artists, e.g. relatives, influences etc.
  • Seeing constituent recordings, e.g. samples, other versions etc.
  • Enhanced security via SSL.

For a full list of changes and help upgrading, please click here.

The documentation below describes in detail how to use V3 of the Quantone API. Documentation for V2 can be found here. Support for V2 was ended on 30th November 2014. If you haven't already, please to V3.

Overview

Data Structure

The Quantone API represents the clearest way to capture all the relevant data about music and recordings. This means there are a couple of things that might take you by surprise: firstly, an album is different from a release – different releases of the same album may have different track listings, dates, etc. – and secondly, tracks are not the same as recordings – the same recording may appear on different releases, meaning that it’s a different “track” on each.

So we do things a little differently at Quantone. To keep things clean, we stick to albums and stay away from particular album releases, unless you ask us not to. And instead of dealing with tracks, we do recordings. Read the below, and have a look around the API – it won’t take long to get used to.

Topics

Our URLs firstly need a sub-URL to specify what type of item you are looking for from following topics:

  • Albums
  • Artists
  • Disctags
  • Recordings

Parameters are then added to your query using the following syntax: ?[parameter name]=[value]. Some parameters accept multiple values, which should be separated by a comma (,). See the reference section below for a full list of available parameters on each topic.

Search queries always return an array of results.

Lookup By ID

You can look up items by Quantone ID by specifying the topic followed by the Quantone Id of what you want to find. For example, you can look up the artist Fleetwood Mac using its Quantone ID with the following query.

https://data.quantonemusic.com/v3/artists/4aea91de-318f-e311-be87-ac220b82800d

Lookup queries always return a single result. If no item matching the ID provided can be found, a 404 error will be returned.

Searching by external ID

As well as looking up by Quantone ID, you can search by various external IDs, including IDs for Spotify and Discogs. You just need to specify which ID type you are using in your search query. All the available ID types are listed in the documentation reference below.

Retrieval Depth

By default, the API will return a basic object with no extra information. Further information can be requested by specifying a retrieval depth. This means that we only provide the information you ask for, and we don’t waste bandwidth and time giving you details you don’t want. You can specify multiple retrieval depths, separating them with a comma. Valid depth parameters for each topic are detailed in the reference below.

Return Values

Objects are returned as JSON by default. Alternatively XML can be returned by added the following to your request header:

Accept: application/xml

The type of object returned depends on the topic – for a full list of topics and the objects they return, see the reference below.

Deserializing Results

If you are a C# or Java user, the easiest way to handle results is through one of our SDKs. These will automatically deserialise results into objects that you can use in your application.

Versions 0.3 and above of the C# SDK are compatible with V3 of the API.

Version 0.1 of the Java SDK, is due to be released on the week commencing 13th October. This too will be compatible with V3 of the API

Full documentation of our object model can be found here. This describes in detail what the results of your queries will look like.

Paging

When Quantone performs a query, it returns all of the IDs found. However, it only resolves the first page of items. To request another page, you need to specify this using the parameter pageNumber=. The first page number is 1.

By default, up to 50 items are returned per page. This can be changed to a lower number by specifying the parameter pageSize=.

Images

Images are currently only available for albums, though in the future we will have them for participants, performances and other items too. Standard images are 600x600 pixels, thumbnails are 100x100, and full maintains the image’s original size.

Dates

In Quantone all date fields contain DateCollection strings. These are constructed from DateTerm strings and other components. All date arguments in queries accept DateRange strings.

Dates are designed to be read by humans who understand English. Translation into other languages is planned for a future release.

A DateTerm can be one of six things:

  • A date in the form YYYY-(M)M-(D)D - e.g. 1940-10-9
  • A date in the form YYYY-(M)M - e.g. 1940-10
  • A date in the form YYYY - e.g. 1940
  • A date in the form The [day number ordinal] of [MonthName] - e.g. The 9th of October
  • A date in the form [MonthName] - e.g. October

A PossibleDateTerm can be one of two things:

  • A confidence and a DateTerm separated by ' '. Possible confidences are: Definitely, Probably, Possibly, Dubiously, Spuriously, Circa - e.g. Definitely 1940-10-9
  • A DateTerm - e.g. 1940-10-9

Confidences as parts of arguments to queries are ignored.

A DateRange can be one of four things:

  • A single PossibleDateTerm - e.g. Definitely 1940-10-9
  • A range between two PossibleDateTerm, separated by ' to ' - e.g. Definitely 1940-10-9 to 1980-12-8
  • A single PossibleDateTerm preceded by 'Since ' - e.g. Since 1960
  • A single PossibleDateTerm preceded by 'Until ' - e.g. Until 1970

A DateCollection string contains some number of DateRange terms delimited by ' and ' - e.g. Definitely 1940-10-9 to 1980-12-8 and 1942-6-18
